Denials
Denials
Edit
Dr. Rice has, several times, noted that she has no intention of running for president in 2008. Despite her emphatic denials, the Draft Condi movement continues to grow. Here is a list of dates and statements she has made about the 2008 race.
| Date of denial | Text of denial and source |
| March 12, 2005 | "I never wanted to run for anything - I don't think I even ran for class anything when I was in school," she said. "I'm going to try to be a really good secretary of state; I'm going to work really hard at it. I have enormous respect for people who do run for office. It's really hard for me to imagine myself in that role." She was then pressed on whether she would rule out a White House bid by reprising Gen. William T. Sherman's 1884 declaration: "If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve.' "Well, that's not fair," she protested with a chuckle. "The last thing I can - I really can't imagine it." Washington Times "2008 run, abortion engage her politically" by Bill Sammon |
| March 13, 2005 | "I don't have any desire or intention of running for president. I've never wanted to run for anything, and I just don't have any desire to do it. ... Tim, I don't want to run for president of the United States. ... I do not intend to run for--no. I will not run for president of the United States. How is that? I don't know how many ways to say "no" in this town. I really don't. MR. RUSSERT: That is a Shermanesque statement? DR. RICE: Shermanesque statement. MR. RUSSERT: You're done. You're out. DR. RICE: I'm done. MR. RUSSERT: There's news. DR. RICE: I hope not. MR. RUSSERT: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who just said she will never run for president, correct? DR. RICE: Tim, why do you keep pressing me to make these statements? MR. RUSSERT: Well, because if you're secretary of state, will it affect your ability... DR. RICE: I don't want to run for president of United States. I have no intention of doing so. I don't think I will be president of the United States ever. Is that good enough? MR. RUSSERT: And you will never run? DR. RICE: I don't intend to run. MR. RUSSERT: But it's different. DR. RICE: I won't run." Meet the Press |
